Let’s begin in the begining or more like 1820, because Koi carp were first bred in 1820 in Japan. Unlike goldfish who was developed in China almost a thousand years ago. Koi was first bred to eat and was finally given to the emperor of Japan in 1914 to roam the waters of his palace. Since the koi have so beautiful colors, they quickly spread worldwide. Supremely koi are descendants from carp and are cousins of goldfish, that’s amazing. What a history.
Let’s talk about breeding a little. Koi spawn in summer, because they can not during winter. Funnily the eggs have a sticky lair which makes it sink to the bottom. The koi eggs can hatch in like 4-7 days and thousands of babies can be born. As you know koi where first bred in Japan by farmers who noticed the colorful spots on koi, and now graciously thy swim and make the ponds of the world beautiful. Breeding sounds fun.
After all these facts let’s get to the cool stuff. The biggest koi ever recorded was a whooping 4 feel long. Surprisingly koi will happily gobble up everything you feed them including lettuce and watermelon. Koi like people can get sun burn, and koi like to have other koi around. And the oldest koi which was 226 years old was quite old. Normal koi only gets 2-3 feet long but since a Chagio is not a normal koi it can get to a length of 4 feet. Koi can live in aquariums if they are little, because big koi would not fit. Is there cool stuff in your pond.
