The Story of the Hummings

by Lillian Davis

Interestingly hummingbirds are dressed in unique looks and colours. Mrs. Hum is the most magnificent hummingbird in the world. She sparkles when she is in the sunlight because of the fine, shiny coating her feathers. She keeps comparing with other males’ bright chests and throats to see who will be her mate. In a month she found a male as gorgeous as herself, they fluttered next to each other and looked like jewel and gem, which reflected the light so beautifully. Surely they have a unique appearance.

In the forest, food is needed for the hummingbirds.  Mr. Ing has food for his mate (and for himself) while thinking about their little chicks.  Suddenly he found his nest with his wife, Mrs Hum, inside. He gives her nectar that has a few ants, gnats and flies inside it.  Mrs. Hum explained that while he was gone, she felt a crack underneath her, because the eggs were hatching.  So in three days the couple had five chicks who quickly gobbled fifty to sixty meals each day!!  The chicks grew and feasted although their tummies were tiny and became young adults.  They got their energy from honey and nectar, which is from their miniature diet.

Hummingbirds are super birds because they fly superfast. Mr. and Mrs. Humming and their five, adorable chicks invented their new surname while migrating. It all happened when Mr. Ing knew that hum + ing = humming, which is their species. Amazingly the chicks agreed while trying to fly. In a day’s time the hummings were at South Africa drinking nectar and interestingly having a holiday. After the holiday Mr. and Mrs. Humming were so full that they couldn’t get off the ground!! (They were alone because the chicks fell in LOVE!)The Hummings even fly better than helicopters and that will end this story.

The end.
