We need to be free, free from all our bondages and one of the things that is holding us back are the temptations in life.  All of us are struggling with one or another form of temptation, it is a big thing.  If it was a small thing the devil would not have tried to tempt Jesus.   Today I am continuing this study of temptations and share what I have learned.

Jesus was tempted with 3 things and I believe those are the greatest temptations of human kind, these temptations are stealing our freedom, we get chained by them.  Jesus overcame these temptations and through Him we all can learn to overcome.  Today I am giving an overview of Jesus’s temptations on the mountain

In parallel to the temptations, I want to show how Mat 22;37

Love the Lord with all your heart, all your mind, all your soul

Is the price to pay if we do not resist temptation BUT it is also the reward if we do resist temptation

And I am going to show how each temptation is linked to 1 John 2:16

For all that is in the world – the desires of the flesh, the desires of the eyes and the pride of life is not from the Father but from the world.

The first temptation:

Mat 4: 3-4

The tempter came to Him and said, “If You are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”

But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. ‘”

The first temptation was that of hunger, hunger is a physical temptation.  Therefore 1 John 2:16 mentions

For all that is in the world – the desires of the flesh ……………. – is not from the Father but from the world.

The world will constantly challenge and tempt your physical desires. When you give into your physical desires, your heart is not free anymore and you cannot love the Lord God with all your heart

That is why Mat 22:37 tells us.

“Love the Lord God with : All your heart, ………

Your heart is in the centre of your body, it determines what you feel, your heart is where desires are born, your heart starts to pump warm blood into your body when you feel the rush of a temptation.  To overcome the temptation of the flesh, you need to fill your heart with the Word of God, with His bread. If you love the Lord God with all your heart, you will be able to resist physical temptation.

The second temptation:

Mat 4:5-7

Then the devil took Him to the holy city and set Him on the pinnacle of the temple.

“If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw Yourself down. For it is written: (Ps 91:11,12)

‘He will command His angels concerning You, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’”

Jesus replied, “It is also written: (Deut 6:16)

‘Do not put the Lord you God to the test. ‘”

The second temptation was that of position, a temptation of the mind.  Therefore 1 John 2:16 mentions

For all that is in the world – ……….. and the pride of life “ is not from the Father but from the world.

The world will constantly challenge and tempt you to seem important, to have angels lifting you up. When you give into pride of life, your mind is obsessed with you and not with God.

That is why Mat 22:37 tells us.

“Love the Lord God with : ….. All your mind.

Your mind can play tricks on you. What you think, what you think you need, desires, pride can make certain things tempting to you.  If people look up to me, love me then I am a good person, which can lead to people pleasing and not necessarily God pleasing.  If I can rise to the top of my profession, then I have made it in life, which means that my positon in life is more important than the Position God has in my life.  If you love the Lord God with all your mind, you will be able to resist temptations of the mind.

The third temptation:

Mat 4:8- 10

Again the devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.

“All this I will give You,” he said, “if You will fall down and worship me.”

“Away from me, Satan!” Jesus declared: “for it is written (Deut 6:13)

‘Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.’”

The third temptation was that of wealth, temptation of things that we desire in our souls.  Therefore 1 John 2:16 mentions

For all that is in the world – ………. the desires of the soul ……………. – is not from the Father but from the world.

The world will constantly challenge and tempt your desires for wealth, prosperity.   When you start to serve ‘’Mammon’’ you cannot love the Lord God with all your soul because you cannot serve two masters simultaneously.

That is why Mat 22:37 tells us.

“Love the Lord God with : ……….All your soul, ………

Your soul yearns for things, for importance, for riches.  Money and possessions are a great temptation. If you have too much stuff, your soul gets full of fear of losing it, full of ideas how to use it, full of desires for more and more, it keeps you busy with things so that you are not able to fill your soul with God.   If you love the Lord God with all your soul, you will be able to resist the temptation of possessions. You will be free from the hold possessions have on your soul.

The end result:

Mat 4:11  Then the devil left Him and angels came and ministered to Him.

God promises us that he will look after our physical hunger – he clothe the lilies in the valleys and feed the birds in the field.  He miraculously fed the Israelites in the desert and ensured that the soles of their sandals never wore out.  God promises that we are His inheritance, His children, children of the ultimate King, the King of Kings, he promises us position and honour above what we can find on earth. He promises us prosperity, that he will bless us beyond our wildest dreams.  All of the things the devil tries to tempt us are things God wants to give to us.  But we need to wait His timing, we should not strive for it in our timing, in the devil’s timing.  The devil is putting this carrot in front of your nose, hoping to catch you.  But if you give in, you will lose out on God’s way, which will be so much better than the devil’s short term gratification.  At the end angels ministered to Jesus.  Wow, so much better than anything the devil could have given Jesus.

Let’s be strong.  Let’s have the courage to investigate where our heart, mind and soul loves other things more than it loves God.  Let us look what is really going on in our hearts, mind and soul.  Let us free ourselves from every bondage in the world, in our flesh, eyes and pride. Let’s experience God in a new, more intimate relationship that will satisfy our needs beyond our wildest imagination.

I wanted to step off the topic of temptations, I was tempted to.  I hope you are still with me on this journey.  I don’t want to judge, I want to investigate with you.   I want to push through on this journey to become free indeed.  I am a bit scared. A bit scared what I will find in my heart, mind and soul, but I am also convinced that it will be good for me in the end to explore, clean and refocus.  I have already started to look at all the verses in the Bible relating the matters of the heart and I am learning new things that inspires me.  Stick with me throughout this journey. Be brave to also look into your own life as I am looking into mine and cut all the bondages of your flesh, eyes and pride and start to worship God with y our heart, soul and mind.  Let us fill our needs and desires with Him and feel the long lasting satisfaction of His Love, Grace and Promises

Final thoughts

Temptations of the flesh will move your heart away from God and remove you from God’s promises of caring.

Loving God with all your heart keeps you from being tempted by the desires of the flesh.

Temptations of position will move your mind away from God and remove you from the inheritance that He wants to bestow on you.

Loving God with all your mind keeps you from desiring earthly sub-optimal positioning.

Temptations of possessions and money will keep your soul form loving God and will remove you from the blessing that He has in store for you.

Loving God with all your soul keeps your desires and pride of life from keeping you in bondage.

Be free – Love the Lord God with all your heart, soul and mind.

May the LORD bless you and keep you.

May His face shine upon you and be gracious to you

May He turn His face toward you and give you peace.
