We need to be free, free from all our bondages and one of the things that is holding us back are the temptations in life. Jesus was tempted to turn stones into bread to satisfy his desire of the flesh. He resisted by quoting scripture that man will live from every word God. He loved God with all his heart and received the reward of angels ministering to him. In this series we will investigate matters of the heart and turn our hearts back to God, loving God with all our hearts, which will free us from the bondage temptations and desires of the flesh has on us.  To become truly free.

Let us look at the first temptation:

Devil: If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread

Jesus: It is written.  Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every work that comes from the mouth of God.

Jesus was hungry after fasting 40 days. The human body can fast, but can it fast for so long?  Have you fasted?  Have you been hungry? All humans get hungry and have a need to be satisfied.   A baby will cry when he is hungry, a person will get angry if his will is not satisfied.  Real hunger is a real body need.

We tend to say: Just listen to your body.  This is maybe not the best advice.  Your body will lust for pleasures.  Some pleasures are good and some are not good.  A sexual drive and pleasure are a real body sensation – it can be fulfilled in a Godly way or in a lustful way.  How in the world will your body contain wisdom?  It is flesh, it does not have the ability to discern. It is a vessel. Be connected to your body and don’t ignore the impulses coming from your body.  The impulses need to be satisfied, but not with what the body whispers in your ear.  A spirit and soul without a body cannot do the good works He ordained us to do. We need to look after our body, accept our body, and be a good steward to our bodies, but we should not allow our bodies to determine our actions.

The world comes to you like Satan came to Jesus. I once saw a video of the temptation of Jesus.  Satan was depicted as an ugly man dressed in a black cape.  I don’t think that is how Satan tempts us.  The Bible says he is cunning. Satan will try to hide his real nature. He will come as a sheep, not a wolf. A wolf in sheep’s clothing   he will pretend he is a fellow believer, otherwise we will surely be clever enough not to fall for his “good and holy” plans with a twist. He comes to us with Scripture. That’s why the Bible warns us against false prophets.  Sheep tend to follow.  Be brave and have courage – speak up against the seemingly ‘good’..

We all experience the reward of pleasure when our satisfaction has been fulfilled.  We cannot hide away from the need of satisfaction or the pleasure of fulfilment, in my mind that is human nature.  When God created Adam’s body, He said: “It is good”.  We need to strive towards goodness for our bodies because God is good. He is the ultimate ideal. Jesus was good here on earth. Our strive towards the wrong things from our bodies starts at the heart. What is at the heart of your lusts?  Our bodies cry out for goodness and try to find a good feeling, which makes us FEEL good. “Oh, wow, that was good!” goodness can give us so much fulfilment. Is it temporary fulfilment?  Do you want permanent fulfilment?  Only God has everlasting permanent Goodness to fill your body up. God created mankind in goodness, and then came the fall.

Sin removed man’s body from being ‘good’ and now man crave that ‘’good’’ feeling. There are so many things in this world that can fill up your needs for goodness – is it fulfilling?

But what do you use to satisfy your need.  Do you eat stones/rocks?  Your father wants to give you bread, but sometimes we are too impatient to wait and we get satisfied with rocks.  Imagine swallowing a rock, it will feel heavy in your stomach, it will take the hunger pains away, you will feel satisfied- but for how long? Later you will be even hungrier, craving for MORE, while the pain in your intestines increases and you forgot that you swallowed a rock.

Many pleasures are available, but it is as if you swallow a rock instead of bread, it will make you FEEL satisfied, but you will not get the needed nutrition from it, leaving your body craving for more. A rock will give you instant satisfaction, but not long lasting. Rocks can be sex, food, TV, games. Satan believes in the power of God – can turn rocks into bread, he will not tempt you with things that are not in your power to do.

Satan tempted with physical hunger, Jesus answered with Spiritual satisfaction.  Will a Father give you a rock when you ask for bread?]

Matt 7:9

Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone?

:11 So if you who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your
Father in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!

Will you satisfy your hunger with junk or with healthy food?  What do you take that satisfies your hunger?  Jesus did miracles with bread. He multiplied bread to more bread, but he did not turn stones to bread.  You need the Bread of life, the Word of God, to satisfy your hunger.

Do you want Satan’s quick fix? Or are you willing to wait for God’s angels to feed you.  I think delayed gratification can be soooo much sweeter.

Listen to your body. Listen to the signals. Discern in your heart what the bodily signal is.  Discern between lust and hunger.  Then find a good pleasure that you can fill it with. God has a lot of good rules in the Bible to help fulfil our needs. We need to be filled with Godly love, which will impact our human feelings that will drive the behaviour of our body.

Bread is a good thing. There are nothing wrong with good things.

Go to the fountain of LIFE and fill up with God’s goodness. Jesus came to earth for that reason!

God wants you to love Him with all your flesh, your heart, for everything you do will flow from it. Jesus at the well with the Samaritan woman. He told her that He is the source that she will never be (thirsty/hungry) when we are sick or hungry to the point of desperation, do we throw everything overboard and just grab what we see and consume it?  Or do we grab the Word and fill ourselves up with it?  We need some self-discipline.

Hedonism = school of thought which argues that pleasure is the only intrinsic good.  To experience pleasure in order to avoid pain. It engage in the pursuit of pleasure, sensually self-indulgent, living and behaving in ways that mean you get as much pleasure out of life as possible, according to the belief that the most important thing in life is to enjoy yourself.  What do you really believe?  Do you believe that you should get as much pleasure out of life as possible or do you do believe that God will supply you with what is good for you?

Final thoughts

All humans get hungry and have a need to be satisfied.

Listening to your body are not the right strategy – we should not allow our bodies to determine our actions.

God created man as “”Good””, but Sin replaced it with a craving to a ‘’good’’ feeling.

Many pleasures are like rocks, short term satisfaction

The father will give you Bread instead of a rock

May the LORD bless you and keep you.

May His face shine upon you and be gracious to you

May He turn His face toward you and give you peace.
