God wants our hearts, He is a jealous God.  He wants our hearts because He know we will be so much better off when our hearts are aligned to Him rather than to anything else.  There are much more protection for our hearts in His hands than anywhere else.

Our previous sessions on the heart looked at:

  • God knows your heart
  • Clean up your heart
  • Drink from the right cup
  • Have a lean, not a fat heart
  • Protect your heart from being hard

Today I want to talk about the freedom of our hearts.  Freedom from whatever will enslave your heart.  God is amazing, when you give your heart to Him, He does not keep it captive, He sets it free.  Anything else you put your heart on will bond you to it, like troubles and worries.  Free your heart by proclaiming Christ as Lord and you will be strengthened.

Let’s start at looking at slavery.

Eph 6:5

Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear and sincerity of heart, just as you would show to Christ.

Even if your body is in slavery, your heart can be free to respect those around you and to be sincere.  It means you are not bitter towards your master.  Think about your spouse, your manager – do you have bitterness in your heart against them?  Then your heart is in bondage to bitterness.  Do you feel free to respect and be sincere (no matter the circumstances), then you are free indeed.

Rom 6:16-18

Do you not know that when you offer yourselves as obedient slaves, you are slaves to the one you obey, whether you are slaves to sin leading to death or to obedience leading to righteousness?  But thanks to God that, though you once were slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obey the form of teaching to which you were committed. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.

Gal 4: 6-7

And because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying out “Abba, Father!” So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, you are also an heir through God.

You are slave to the cup you are drinking from: God’s or the devil’s righteousness or sin. It is your choice.

Remember Annanias and Peter. How mad Peter was that Annanias could get it in his heart to lie about the amount of money he gave. In 2 Cor 9:7 we read that we are free how much we should give.

2 Cor 9:7

Each one should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not out of regret or compulsion, For God knows a cheerful giver.

Annanias was free to give as much as he wanted, he wanted to look good in the eyes of others. “…..look, he also gave everything….” rather than “…..he only gave part…..”  We are free to give as much or little as we decide to, but sometimes we want to impress others and go against our heart’s decision. If anyone judge – who is sinning?

I’ve been watching a few videos of the American comedian Michael Jnr. He has an amazing testimony on how he got his break in the comedy wold.  With his comedy he sometimes gets serious and touches many hearts. In one of his videos he testified on how he was able to help people in need.  It was a big family with adopted kids who were struggling financially and had no transport.  He earns enough just to give the money, but he is adamant that he only gives if God says he has to give.  He tithes 10% to the church without fail, but then, sometimes gives over and above that amount, only if he believes God said he must.  He only moves if God says he must move. That means you need to listen to God and be tuned into His will the whole time.  He did not feel God asked him to give these people the money from his own pocket, and rightly so, because then the glory would come to him.  He decided to trust God and make a show, without any entertainment, where his fans would willingly give money to this cause. The family would have been happy with any type of transport, but the dad taught the family to dream big and trust God. Unbeknownst to Michael Jnr, the dream picture they put up of their dream car they have been praying for was up in the kitchen on the refrigerator. Just giving them the money or the first car they could use would not have strengthen the faith in these children’s lives.  The money Michael Jnr raised was used (without knowledge of the family) to buy a better car than Michael Jnr first imagined.  The car he bought the family was exactly the same model as the one they have been praying for.  Those kids got to see how faithful God were and God was glorified in this, not Michael Jnr.  We need to only give what we believe God ask us to give in our hearts, but that means our hearts MUST be tuned into God, we must be close to God.  I thought this a beautiful story and testimony.

1 Pet 3:3-4

Your beauty should not come from outward adornment such as braided hair or gold jewellery on fine clothes, but from the inner disposition of your heart, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in God’s sight.

We must not be slaves to troubled hearts

Phil 4:7

Be anxious of nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

John 14:1

Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe in me as well.

Luke 12:34

Do not worry, for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

John 14:27

Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled; do not be afraid.

Freedom is to proclaim in your heart Christ as Lord

1 Pet 3:15

But in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give a defence to everyone who asks you the reason for the hope you possess. But respond with gentleness and respect.

Rom 10:8-10

But what does it say? The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart that is the word of faith we are proclaiming: that if you confess with your mouth “Jesus is Lord” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with your heart you believe and are justified and with your mouth you confess and are saved.

A free heart will be strengthened

James 5:8

You too, be patient and strengthen your hearts, because the Lord’s coming is near.

Heb 13:9

Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teaching for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace and not by ceremonial foods, which are of no value to those devoted to them.

Ceremonial foods are of no value to those devoted to them.  You can be in bondage by ceremonial food and that will put a burden on you, you are free from that by grace, no food or strange teachings can strengthen your heart.  I heard statistics that currently there is a trend towards spirituality in America, outside of attending churches.  I am not sure about the facts of whether it is spirituality towards God or towards NewAge, but I am worried that there are so many spiritual movements declaring freedom, but if you really look at that, it is fake and you get into bondage of another matter.  Real freedom can only come in total surrender to the one real God.

Final thoughts

Even if your body is in slavery, your heart can be free.

We are free from giving as much (after tithing) as the Spirit moves us to.

We are free from troubled hearts

Proclaim Christ as Lord and your heart will be strengthened

May the LORD bless you and keep you.

May His face shine upon you and be gracious to you

May He turn His face toward you and give you peace.
