Our choices has a major impact on our lives. When we choose correctly our bad choices from the past will be sealed up and we will receive the Spirit as a mark of our inheritance

I promised that I will touch on the idea of the seal as touched on last week.  Our old lives, old ways of doing things should be sealed off – put away – an act between you and God and then His Spirit can make new impressions on you.

Our previous sessions on the heart looked at:

  • God knows your heart
  • Clean up your heart
  • Drink from the right cup
  • Have a lean, not a fat heart
  • Protect your heart from being hard
  • Freedom in slavery
  • Lies leads to doubt and truth leads to faith

Eph 1:13-14

And in Him, having heard and believed the word of truth, the gospel of our salvation – you were sealed with the Holy Spirit, who is the pledge of our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession, to the praise of His glory.

Has your life been sealed with the Holy Spirit? Have you received this pledge of your inheritance yet?

I want to share this Afrikaans poem with you, which resonated so much with me.

Hy’s binne my,  deur Koos van der Merwe

Hoe kan ek sê wie is Hy

Die Gees wat in my bly

Want Hy maak net soos Hy wil

Eers ‘n Storm en dan’s Hy stil.

Hoe kan ek dit verstaan?

Soos die wind wat kom en gaan?

Soos ‘n duif wat saggies kom

En dan weer vlamme oral om

Hoe kan ek dit beduie?

Soos die stormreën se buie

Soos die groot rivier se stroom

En die mooiste vrugteboom.

Eers sukkel my gebede

Maar nou is ek tevrede

Eers was ek sonder raad

Maar nou het ek ‘n advokaat

Hy’s binne my

Hy’s met my

En diep in my

Is waar Hy bly.

Beautiflly written poem to express but a little of how it feels to have the Holy Spirit.

Jer 32:10-11

I signed and sealed the deed, called in witnesses, and weighed out the silver on the scales. Then I took the deed of purchase – the sealed copy with its terms and conditions, as well as the open copy, …..

When buying land or a car, we buy it “as is”, in Afrikaans we use the word “Voetstoots” .  God buys your heart Voetstoots with the blood of Jesus Christ – a seal. He seals all our wrongdoings and keeps it safe from Satan attacking us on it, but also asks us to have an open copy.

We are sometimes scared to show our weaknesses, but God seals it, seals any shame into the closed document, so that we can share openly without worrying about rejection.

2 Cor 1:21-22

Now it is God who establishes both us and you in Christ. He anointed us, placed His seal on us, and put His Spirit in our hearts as a pledge of what is to come.

What does all means?  We have confirmation of our hope, we can be confident in our hope. The Gift of the Spirit is the seal of the covenant between God and People.

Read this again:  Now it is God who establishes both us and you in Christ. He anointed us, placed His seal on us, and put His Spirit in our hearts as a pledge of what is to come.

There are 3 ideas here. Anoints, seal, earnest.

“seal” of the Spirit. Seal Is made soft by warmth to leave a copy of itself.

“warm” your heart towards God and He can imprint His Spirit on it.  When I choose to have faith and believe, I warm my heart towards God. When I pray for His direction, His Spirit in me can imprint the answer on my heart.

Many times we do have the Spirit in us, but because we harden our hearts – we have turned cold towards God, we cannot “hear” Him – He cannot make an impression.  Hard wax can be pushed down with a lot of force, but no impression is made – it must soften and it softens with warmth – trials?

The seal shows who the owner of the letter is.  The letter and thoughts belongs to the one who wrote it. Seal was used on a letter, a way of communication.

Also a sign of “no tampering”

A serious “earnest” small portion of purchase, money or wager at the beginning of a bargain with assurance the rest will be paid in due time.

In 2 Cor the author talks about some difficulty in life, in this world, but it’s OK, because we have an eternal dwelling waiting….

2 Cor 5:5

And God has prepared for us this very purpose and has given us the Spirit – as a pledge of what is to come.

Eternity is waiting for us, Our purpose in life should be to be ready for eternity and live life as if we believe there is an eternity with God.  There can only be an eternity with God if there is a God that is real, with a real Father heart, a real person that walked this earth and a real Spirit that can still be experienced today.  Our purpose it to live life filled with the Holy Spirit, proclaiming we believe that the Son was on earth, died, rose up and are now busy with the Father to prepare a place for us in eternity.  The Spirit is the pledge of what is to come, a small investment God is making in us to prepare us for the big investment waiting.

Final thoughts

You are ‘’Voetstoots” for God, good enough the way you are

He seals all your wrongdoings in the purchase agreement, it is not a surprise to Him, neither a problem to Him.

The Gift of the Spirit is the seal of the covenant between God and People.

“warm” your heart towards God and He can imprint His Spirit on it

To live your life as if you believe there is a heaven, is your purpose in life.

Don’t carry on in life without God’s seal, His Spirit, be open and inviting, live your purpose.

May the LORD bless you and keep you.

May His face shine upon you and be gracious to you

May He turn His face toward you and give you peace.
