This week I am looking at what it means to renew your mind.
It is interesting that some scholars say the word used for a ‘’sound mind’’ is derived from the word diaphragm, which brings safety to the body and keeps it controlled properly. A sound mind keeps the body controlled properly and brings safety to the body. We need to renew our minds and then use the renewed mind to bring safety to our bodies.
Jesus tells his followers to not be conformed and to renew their minds, then He chased unclean spirits from a man. Let’s see their response.
When they came to Jesus, they saw the man (who had been possessed by the legion of demons) sitting there, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.
Jesus renewed the mind of the possessed man, so that he was in his right mind again. It scared the people. Maybe their minds were not renewed to accept miracles.
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing for your mind. Then you will be able to discern what is the good, pleasing and perfect will of God.
When our minds are renewed, we will not be afraid of miracles. We can only discern between good and evil when our minds are renewed.
But this is not the way you came to know Christ. Surely you heard of Him and we taught in Him, in keeping with the truth that is in Jesus, to put off your former way of life, your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires, to be renewed in the spirit of your minds and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
To be renewed means to be made young again. We need to make our minds young again. There are so many things that we started to believe growing up, which are probably wrong. We need to take our minds back to being young, back to BEFORE we became mistrustful, cynical, and influenced incorrectly. Then we can mature our mind, by the Spirit, in the right way.
God’s word is a two edged sword.
…. Exposing and sifting and analysing and judging the very thoughts and purposes of the heart.
God’s Word with the Spirit exposes everything that needs to be cut out and that needs to be left aside.
Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.
Earthly things are to be cut out and heavenly things need to be left in. The double edged sword helps with this process.
Jesus knows our thoughts and wants to help us by cutting out what is not good for us.
But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil and harbour malice in your hearts?”
And knowing their thoughts, He said to them……
But He was aware all along of their thoughts
But Jesus, as He perceived the thoughts of their hearts
But He, aware of their intent and purpose….
Therefore then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Deity is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device.
Man’s thinking can be called earthly thinking or worldly thinking. This type of thinking puts value in things like gold, silver, etc. all of that is earthly stuff. We need to renew our minds from these types of things.
1 Cor 3:20
And again, “The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.”
Here the word ‘wise’ comes from ‘’sophon’’ in Greek, which means skilled, clever, learned. Not the type of wisdom from God, but the info from books.
A renewed mind is a sound mind.
A sound mind brings safety to the body.
A sound mind accepts miracles.
A sound mind can discern between good and evil.
A renewed mind is to have a young mind again.
God’s two edged sword cuts between what must go and what must stay.
It cuts between earthly and heavenly things.
Jesus knows our thoughts and wants to help us to cut out what is not good for us.
May the LORD bless you and keep you.
May His face shine upon you and be gracious to you
May He turn His face toward you and give you peace.
