Previously I talked about the mind and how to free your mind from temptations.  Some of the things I have already covered are:

  • What you think Success should look like
  • How the heart and mind influences one another.
  • What it means to renew your mind.
  • How a mind looks like that needs renewing.

This week I am looking at changing my mind.  Changing my mind about unity and changing my mind, which means to repent, repenting the first step towards renewing your mind.

Phil 2:5

In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus.

Christ Jesus was in unity with the Father, and the Spirit, they are one. And the three of them have ONE goal in mind, to save all who believe in them.   Later in today’s message you will also see that Jesus had the mindset of repentance and so many after him wrote about it too, all of them were in agreement that repentance is important.

1 Cor 1:10

I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree together, so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be united in mind and conviction.

To have real unity will require me to be OK that my thinking might not always be accepted by the group’s thinking.  To understand that there is a time to push my point and a time to sit back and accept the group’s opinion.  In such a situation it is always important to know what the group wants to achieve.

Rom 15:6

That together you may with united hearts and one voice, praise and glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

In the upper room:

Acts 1:14

All of these with their minds in full agreement devoted themselves steadfastly to prayer, [waiting together] with the women and Mary, the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.

If the group has one goal: “Wait on God” then all difference of opinion must be measured against that.  As Christians our goal should be to glorify God, surely we do it when we when we are operating in unity?

Acts 2:46

And day after day the regularly assembled in the temple with the united purpose, and in their houses they broke bread. They partake in their food with gladness and simplicity and generous hearts.

Acts 4:24

And when they heard it, lifted their voices together with one united mind to God

Acts 5:12

Now by the hands of the apostles numerous and startling signs and wonders were being performed among the people. And by common consent they all met together.

Acts 8:6

And great crowds of people with one accord listened to and heeded what was said by Philip, as they heard him and watched the miracles and wonders which he kept performing.

When we are united with one another and we stand in unity, we might just see more miracles around us…..

As I mentioned earlier, repent means to change your mind.   John the Baptist was sent as a messenger to go before Jesus and prepare the way.  How did he prepare the way?

Mat 3:1-2

In those days there appeared John the Baptist, preaching in the Wilderness of Judea. And saying, “Repent (think differently, change your mind) for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

And a major theme in Jesus’s ministry was also around repentance.

Mat 4:17

From that time Jesus began to preach, crying out, “Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

Jesus said in Matthew and it is also capture in Luke

Mat 12:41

The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgement with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, Someone more and greater than Jonah is here!

Two similar verses in Luke 15, verses 7 and 10, shows how serious this subject was to Jesus

Luke 15:7

“Thus, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one wicked person who repents, than over 99 righteous persons who have no need of repentance.”

Jesus sent out the disciples.  Let us read in Mark what their goal was.

Mark 6:12

So they went out and preached that men should repent.

Acts 2:38 3:19 and 8:22 sounds exactly the same.  After Jesus went back to heaven, the apostles carried on with the repentance message

Acts 2:38

And Peter answered them, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of and release from your sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

It is critical to be humble if we want to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, because if you feel you don’t need repentance, you probably don’t need to the Holy Spirit either.

Final thoughts

Unity is important, as demonstrated in the Trinity

To have unity is to have one goal

Miracles are more prevalent in times of unity.

John the Baptist started with requesting people to repent, to change their minds.

Jesus and his disciples preached repentance.

The gift of the Holy Spirit follows repentance

May the LORD bless you and keep you.

May His face shine upon you and be gracious to you

May He turn His face toward you and give you peace.
