Last week we discussed the lies, the ratpoison that is added to the WORD, which is evident in the WORLD.   Let us look at Jesus’s response during His temptation….  Each and every time he repeated a part of scripture (WORD) back to Satan.

Many Scholar’s connects Jesus’s temptation to the passage in Mat 22:37 and 1 John 2:15-17

When Jesus was asked which commandment is the greatest, he replied in Mat 22:37

“Love the Lord your God with

all your heart

and with

all your soul

and with

all your mind.”

1 John 2:15-17

Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the father is not in Him.

For all that’s in the world

the desires of the flesh

the desires of the eyes

and the pride of life

is not from the Father but from the World.

The world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God, remains forever.

Our heart, soul and mind and most (all) of our temptations can fall into these three categories. We can only succeed if we love God with our heart, soul and mind more than we love the world, the lies, the temptations.

Here in 1John2 the word ‘’world’’ (is not from the Father but from the world) means ‘’kosmon’’ in Greek (order, the world, universe, worldly affairs, adornment, cosmetic).  It is not ‘’earth’’ from the word ‘’ ge’’: the earth, land.

We can love God’s creation, the earth, the animals, plants, landscapes, all that he has made, but not the adornments man has added to the earth, which is called the world.

We will need to start to discern what is from the Father (Word) and what is from the World.

To bring Matthew and 1 John together:

Do not love the desires of the flesh in the world, rather love the Lord God with all your heart

Do not love the desires of the eyes in the world, rather love the Lord God with all your soul

Do not love the pride of life in the world, rather love the Lord God with all your mind

Jesus gave his disciples a solution:

Mat 26:42

Watch and pray, that you enter not into temptation: the Spirit in deed is willing, but the flesh is week.

Watch and pray.  Open up your eyes to see the pitfalls around you.  Open up your spiritual eyes to be able to discern when Satan is busy tempting you, but then pray. Your best defence is to pray.

The disciplines had serious Trials coming their way, they had to be aware of danger and persecution.

The spirit is willing, ready, eager, but the flesh…  it reminds me of Paul where he said that he wants to do right, but he has a thorn in his flesh.

Again I think we need to ask God to help us looking out for these tests/trials/temptations.  We need to open up our spiritual eyes to see them coming. We need to watch and pray. Pray the Lord ’s Prayer.  We need all the help we could get.

We are in this world, not from it

May the LORD bless you and keep you.

May His face shine upon you and be gracious to you

May He turn His face toward you and give you peace.
