We need to be free, free from all our bondages and one of the things that is holding us back are the temptations in life.  All of us are struggling with one or another form of temptations, it is a big thing.  If it was a small thing the devil would not have tried to tempt Jesus.   Today I am continuing this study of temptations and share what I have learned.

Watch and pray, that is what I have hammered on last week.  Life gets busy and we don’t always get the time to watch and pray.  Even if we just spend the first 5 minutes of waking up to watch and pray, we are protecting ourselves from temptations.

In Greek the word temptation is “peirasmos” an experiment, a trial, temptation.  It can be both figuratively or literally at the same time, Positive ‘’test’’ or negative ‘’temptation’’.  The dictionary defines temptation as

The desire to do something, especially something wrong or unwise

Temptations and tests will come our way (wise man, foolish man) but we can also position ourselves in the way of temptation, which will entangle us.

When you decide to move toward pornography, you are leading yourself into temptation. When you buy the chocolate. When you look through cars you cannot afford. When you don’t deal you’re your own irritations and your children comes home.  When we go to a nightclub and drink too much, get in contact with drugs, find a promiscuous person attractive. When we crave money, prosperity, popularity above God.  Not matter how big or small, we all get tested, tempted.

Jesus’s disciples were tested/tempted in various ways.  During the Last Supper in Luk 22:25 they were bickering about who had the highest and who the lowest rank.   Here Jesus gave them a compliment: “You have stayed with me in my time of trial”

Jesus was tested beyond human imagination by the devil on the mountain, by the fellow Jews. He needed friends to stand by Him to support Him without judging Him. Can we be that friend to others? Can we support each other and help in trials without judging?

I hate it when I feel people are judging me and my situation, but I must look into the mirror and realize there are times that I was judgmental.  Will you forgive me?

Just after passage with the great compliment, they failed Jesus when he went to pray because HE knew the major test/trial He will be facing.  His friends unfortunately did not watch and pray long enough to support him.  We need to help each other and watch and pray constantly together to help each other with trials and temptations.

In Mat 6:13 and Luke 11:46 Jesus tried to teach us via the Lord’s Prayer to pray to God not to lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Mat 26:39 Like Jesus did in the Garden of Gethsemane, where he prayed:

“My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me. Yet not as I will, but as You will.”

If Jesus had to pray, how much more should we not pray?  Some trials are tests, they are difficult times, but difficult times can lead us into temptation, we can loose hope and faith.

As in Ps 141:1 “Incline not my heart to any evil thing, to practice wicked works with the workers of iniquity

I also think we can ask God to open our eyes to temptations. He wants to build our character and the only way to open our eyes are for us to see it in practice.

I was at a stage where I got despondend for having to go over the same trial over and over again.  How many times must I eat this bag of salt? Can I not overcome it and get over with?

We think we have patience, kindness, all the fruit of the Spirit, until we are presented with a situation where we have to practice this.  We will be fools if we think we have nothing to build on our character further.  Our character needs constant improvement, we are in the process of becoming like Jesus. We are not there YET. The day we think we’ve arrived is probably the day we arrive in Heaven! J

Luke 8:13 Parable Sower

The seeds on rocky ground are those who hear the word and receive it with joy, but they have no root. They believe for a season, but in time of testing(temptation) they fall away.

Not deep roots, not enough water, faith not strong

We all had these times when our faith were challenged, when something happened to make us ask questions of God, His goodness, His existence. The reason we were a bit shaky was because we have no root. Or our roots are not deep enough.

Final thoughts

None of us are exempt from temptations, big or small.

We need faith and hope to keep on watching and praying.

We need to ask others to help us watch and pray.

We need to be non-judgmental for other’s temptations if they ask us to help them watch and pray.

May the LORD bless you and keep you.

May His face shine upon you and be gracious to you

May He turn His face toward you and give you peace.
