I have started to share my thoughts with you on red blood cells, specifically the impact of iron in the heamoglobin that gives the red blood cells shape and colour. I want to jump right in and address the other critical function of red blood cells today – the ability of red blood cells to deliver oxygen to the body and remove poison, carbon dioxide.
I enjoyed a talk by LIndi Strydom where she used breathing as an analogy for how we should live life. We must keep to breathe God in, His Word, relationship with Him, but then also breathe out – do things, talk about Him, live a life that testifies of Him. We cannot only breathe in, in, in, we can also not breathe out the whole time, life is sustained by breathing in and out, in and out – a perfect rhythm for living your life. We breathe oxygen in and breathe carbondioxide out.
Why is oxygen, breathing, so important? Maybe a silly question, it is obvious! To life! But what happens during breathing? On a physical level: breathing removes CO2 from the lungs and replaces it with Oxygen. Oxygen is required for our metabolism. It is required to burn the fuel in each and every cell of the body to stay alive, to function properly, to reproduce. Look at a fire: Oxygen is one of the key ingredients for a fire, without oxygen, a fire cannot burn. Without oxygen the body cannot burn the carbohydrates, fat, proteins it requires for creating the energy we need to live. On a spiritual level: The Holy Spirit is our oxygen, we need to breathe in the Holy Spirit on a daily basis to fuel our hearts, without the Holy Spirit we cannot ‘burn the fire’ in our hearts for God.
Like the oxygen is carried to the heart and to rest of the body via the Red Blood Cells in our blood, so the blood of Jesus carries the the Holy Spirit to the rest of your being. You can only receive the Holy Spirit in your being, in your soul, when you have accepted Jesus’s blood to purify you. Your spiritual veins requires Jesus’s red blood cells to carry the Holy Spirit. Without believing in Jesus AND accepting Him as your Lord and Saviour, you cannot fathom the Holy Spirit.
Oxygen gives life. You breathe in life. The blood transports that life to all areas of the body.
I find the first breath of life was when God created mankind.
Gen 2:7 Then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.
God has started live on earth with a breath of life. He designed mankind to be alive on earth with breathing oxygen in. Is your Spirit alive? Or do you just survive physically on earth?
Here is a few more Bible verses supporting the concept of Him giving us life through His Breath.
Job 33:4 The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
Isaiah 42:5 Thus says the God the LORD, Who created the heavens and stretched them out, Who spread out the earth and its offspring, Who gives breath to the people on it and spirit to those who walk in it.
Jesus is the Life for us:
Acts 17:25 Nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things;
Let us come back to Oxygen. Oxygen is a chemical that is found in the air, that has no colour, taste, or smell, and that is necessary for life in the same way the Spirit of God is found all around us – it has no colour, taste or smell, but it is necessary for life.
But we don’t breathe in pure oxygen, unfortunately not. Air is the invisible mixture of gases (such as nitrogen and oxygen) that surrounds the Earth and that people and animals breathe. Air contains Neutral elements (like Nitrogen), good elements (like Oxygen), and bad elements (like sulphur, pollution, particles, dust). The air we breathe in is not pure oxygen. In the same way the Spiritual realm is not necessarily pure. Many people are spiritual, but they believe all kinds of things. As oxygen is invisible, so is carbon dioxide, nitrogen and traces of other pollutants in the air. In the same way. both God and Satan (and a lot of other spiritual elements) are invisible, but around us every day, constantly. Only 21% of air contains oxygen. How much of the air around you is filled with the Spirit? What do you breathe in daily? Do you breathe in bitterness, contempt, negativity? Or do you fill your life with gratitude, love, faith?
To breathe means to move air into and out of your lungs, to inhale fresh air and exhale old air that comes from your body. Your body mostly ignores nitrogen, unless the oxygen is too low. Breathe in the Spirit daily into your lungs and then let Jesus’s blood transport that Life giving breath to the rest of your body, ignore the other things that means nothing, that is inert. We should be careful though, if we don’t breathe in enough oxygen, the nitrogen, that is inert, that means nothing, starts to get absorbed and can become a poison that kill you. If you breathe in enough oxygen, the nitrogen has no effect, but if you starve of oxygen, the nitrogen starts to have an effect. On a Spiritual level you will be alive if you keep up breathing the Spirit in, but be careful, the nitrogen, the world and all its influences, which you think means nothing, can become the poison that kills you – you cannot be blaze about all things, you cannot be room temperature, at spiritual room temperature, you might get poisoned. I think that is why so many Christians who really believe, but who are not yet Spirit filled, might live a life that seems poisonous – they have not learned the impact of nitrogen (that seems inert) in a live without oxygen. I can see in my life when I let go of the discipline of daily connecting to God, that so many other things start to crumble. When I pick up the discipline of breathing Him in again, I can cope better with life’s demands and I an think more clearly about the day ahead.
We need to breathe in the spirit every day, every minute, in and out, in and out, to ensure His Spirit stays alive in us. Saturate your life with God. I have learned in fire training that a fire can still burn if there is only 9 % oxygen left in the air around you, but a human being, start to suffocate if the air around you contains less than 14% of oxygen. The air you breathe, should be filled with more than 14% oxygen, more than 14% of Godly things. Your day should contain more than 14% pure, Godly stuff. If you spend too much time on TV, video games, ipad, work, ministry etc., you will need to relook at your priorities, you will not be able to function with a dead spirit. Feed the Spirit in you, Feed your blood with oxygen.
Heamoglobin in red blood cells will bond to both oxygen and carbon dioxide, but before that bond can take place, the gas molecules must be dissolved in the plasma (the fluid part of the blood). If Carbon dioxide in solution is not bonded to the heamoglobin, it reduces the pH of the blood with harmful effects, that is why it is critical for the blood to carry waste materials and carbon dioxide away from all body tissues.
Carbon dioxide is a heavy, colourless gas CO2 that does not support combustion, it dissolves in water to form carbonic acid. When a fire burns, carbon dioxide is formed. When a body cell combines sugar with oxygen to get energy, carbon dioxide is formed there, too. But too much carbon dioxide could poison a cell. They need some way to get rid of carbon dioxide. The blood brings oxygen to the body cells and takes away the carbon dioxide formed in the cells. The blood that travels back to the heart and lungs is dark red. It has picked up carbon dioxide from the body cells, and it has left most of its oxygen with the cells. We can think of the dark coloured, carbon dioxide-rich blood as “used” blood. This is the blood that the heart pumps into the lungs to replace the carbon dioxide with oxygen.
Spiritually we get exposed to poisons every day. I see the poisons as half-truths that enters our lives. Carbon dioxide is one carbon molecule combined with two oxygen molecules. If Oxygen is Truth (O2), I see the Carbon, (C) as the twist to the truth added to it to form CO2, Carbondioxide. We need to pray for discernment. We need to remove all the poison and twisted truths in your lives, and breathe it out, as we breathe new life in. We need the Blood of Jesus to discern what is good and what is bad, we need the blood throughout our body, from all our limbs to expose the Carbon molecules, the half-truths, and allow the Blood to expose of it. This is a constant process, you cannot do it today and hope the rest of the week will be fine without half truths.
Let us look at these poisons. What can poison you?
I did a search for the word poison in the Bible and stumbled on interesting passages
In Job we read:
Job 13:26 For You write bitter things against me [in Your bill of indictment] and make me inherit and be accountable now for all the iniquities of my youth.
His past was brought up to him to account for his current state of life. Your past will have an influence on you today, that is strewn with a lot of half-truths and need to be dealt with, you need to breathe it out.
Another poison can be found in Deut 29.
Deut 29:18, 19 Beware lest there should be among you a man or woman, or family or tribe, whose [mind and] heart turns away this day from the Lord our God to go and serve the gods of these nations; lest there should be among you a [poisonous] root that bears gall and wormwood. And lest, when he hears the words of this curse and oath, he flatters and congratulates himself in his [mind and] heart, saying, I shall have peace and safety, though I walk in the stubbornness of my [mind and] heart [bringing down a hurricane of destruction] and sweep away the watered land with the dry.
People in your life can affect you with half-truths that can poison you. This passage also shows that stubbornness can poison you.
The impact of your lips can be seen in the following passages:
Hos 10:4 They have spoken mere words of the lips, swearing falsely in making covenants; therefore judgment springs up like hemlock [or other poisonous plants] in the furrows of the field.
Rom 3:13 Their throat is a yawning grave; they use their tongues to deceive (to mislead and to deal treacherously). The venom of asps is beneath their lips.
Jam 3:8 But the human tongue can be tamed by no man. It is a restless (undisciplined, irreconcilable) evil, full of deadly poison.
Sometimes we think mere words of the lips, white lies, are not that bad, but it is one of the ways you can poison your mind. Also be careful of making false covenants. Your word is your word. Your Yes should be Yes, not Maybe, and in the same way your No should be No. In the book of Healthy boundaries, we learn that we should not say we will do something to make the other person feel better, knowing you will later find a very good excuse not delivering on your promise. ONLY the blood of Jesus will be able to contain your tongue and help you to discern.
Another poison can be found in Job.
Job 20:15 – 16 He has swallowed down [his ill-gotten] riches, and he shall vomit them up again; God will cast them out of his belly. He shall suck the poison of asps [which ill-gotten wealth contains]; the viper’s tongue shall slay him.
To obtain money unlawfully, to be untruthful with money, be it your tax returns, be it your quotations, will poison you. Again here I think the half-truths are the things that catches us off guard easily.
Another big sign of poison in your life is to lead a perverse, ungodly life:
Ps 58:3-4 The ungodly are perverse and estranged from the womb; they go astray as soon as they are born, speaking lies. Their poison is like the venom of a serpent; they are like the deaf adder or asp that stops its ear,
Leading a perverse, ungodly life is one of the biggest signs of poison.
I recently heard a quote,
“You eventually become like the 5 people you spend most of your time with.”
How does the 5 people you spend most of your time with look like? Are they perverse or are they godly?
And the impact of all these poisons:
It will turn something good into something bitter.
Amos 6:12 Do horses run upon rocks? Do men plow the ocean with oxen? But you have turned justice into [the poison of] gall and the fruit of righteousness into [the bitterness of] wormwood.
Again, the fruit will show. Have you turned justice into gall? Have you turned the fruit of righteousness into wormwood? Are you reasonable about things? Or do you twist and turn the facts to suit your own needs? Do you add a bit of Carbon to the Oxygen? When that happens, when fruit go bitter, it will leave a bitter taste in the mouths of those around you. Guard yourself against half truths! Against wrong motives. I must be so careful in my own life – I can easily do things from the wrong motive and then the end result is sometimes bitter. If you spend time with people like that, their poison can affect you.
How do you guard yourself against that poison?
In Deut we get one clue – where should you be connected to?
Deut 32:31-32 For their rock is not like our Rock, even our enemies themselves judge this. For their vine comes from the vine of Sodom and from the fields of Gomorrah; their grapes are grapes of [poisonous] gall, their clusters are bitter.
If your arteries, or veins, are not connected to the true Vine, the Rock, your fruit will be bitter and poisonous. Stay connected, keep on breathing the good oxygen and breathe out all the carbondioxide.
The closing thought for today:
Ensure the air around you is clean and contains enough oxygen, enough of God’s Spirit and His Wisdom.
Breathe Him in daily and breathe out all the poisons in your life.
Ask the Spirit for discernment against poisons (sins from the past, toxic people in your life, white lies, false covenants, unlawful money)
Allow the Blood of Jesus, the red blood cells, to fuel your day with oxygen and to remove half truths from each and every cell in your body.
I hope you have a great, blessed week, filled with good Spirit oxygen!
