We are busy with the series around the blood as a sign for communion. Today we tackle the last aspect of the water and at the end I will give a summary.
Throughout the ages, hygiene has proved to keep one from several illnesses. We still see today that some third world countries struggle with breakouts of multiple diseases and one of the causes is that they don’t have pure, running water and that they don’t live in hygenic circumstances.
The first world countries regard hygiene very high. We wash ourselves often, we wash our utensils and our crockery. We know washing with water, cleanses. It washes away all the dirt, all the bacteria, so that it can be used and so that we can stay healthy.
Water cleanses, it washes dirt/bacteria off. In the same way God’s blood cleanses and washes away our dirt (the sins in our lives), so that we can stand blameless and clean in front of the Father.
We read a lot about cleaning in the Old Testament. The word “Kaphar” was used, which meant: appease, make atonement, cleanse. When we make atonement (repent from our sins) we simultaneously clean ourselves. Atonement and cleaning has the same meaning, as we repent, we get clean and we appease God.
Cleanliness in the Old Testament was riddled with many many detail and laws.
Ex 29: 36 You shall offer every day a bull as a sin offering for atonement. And you shall cleanse the altar by making atonement for it, and anoint it to consecrate it.
Ex 32:30 The next day Moses said to the people, You have sinned a great sin. And now I will go up to the Lord; perhaps I can make atonement for your sin.
Lev 4:20 Thus shall he do with the bull; as he did with the bull for a sin offering, so shall he do with his; and the priest shall make atonement for [the people], and they shall be forgiven.
Lev 14:19 And the priest shall offer the sin offering and make atonement for him who is to be cleansed from his uncleanness, and afterward kill the burnt offering.
Each family had to atone, one family could not atone, get clean, for another one’s sins:
1 Chron 21:24. And Kind David said to Ornan, No but I will pay the full price. I will not take what is yours for the Lord, nor burnt offerings which cost me nothing.
Some other person cannot atone for your sins – ONLY you can make your own repentance. ONLY Jesus can atone.
Blood is not typically seen as a cleansing aid, as we all know that blood can carry a lot of diseases and can make you severely ill, that is why we clean with water.
The animals used in the sacrifices, had to be bled thoroughly before sacrificing. Blood was seen as being unclean, no blood was allowed to be consumed. In the same way our sins makes us, our blood unclean.
I love the way God is the same yesterday, today and in the future. He does not change. His natural laws, His analogies, stays the same. From Genesis through to the new testament.
Gen 9:6 Whoever sheds man’s blood, by man, shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God he made man.
Isaiah 24:5 The land and the earth also are defiled by their inhabitants, because they have transgressed the laws, disregarded the statues, and broken the everlasting covenant.
Eze 22:4 In your blood which you have shed you have become guilty, and you are defiled by the ideols which you have made, and you have caused your time [of judgment and punishment’ to draw near and have arrived at the full measure of your years…….
Numbers 35:33 So you shall not pollute the land in which you live; for blood pollutes the land, and no atonement can be made for the land for the blood shed in it, but by the blood of him who shed it.
Blood pollutes and in the same way sin pollutes our lives. The word “Chaneph” used in Num 35 means to be polluted, profane, corrupt, godlessness. That embodies sin, does it not? This piece in Numbers talks about a great sin, the sin of killing someone. If someone has killed someone innocently on your land, you were allowed to kill that person on the land, to atone for the land. In the next chapter I will talk about your body being a piece of land. This passage shows me that my body, land, is polluted with sin, and the only way it can be atoned for is the One who’s blood had no sin, who’s blood was pure. Only Jesus’s blood worthy. Only Jesus’s blood that was shed can bring true atonement. That is also why you can pray Jesus’ blood on your doors, windows, outer walls of your property. Let His blood clean and atone your land, physically and spiritually. ONLY Jesus can atone.
Ongoing atonement is required. It is important to pray the blood of Jesus on your physical land – your home and heart, but also on our minds (emotional land) and our hearts (spiritual land) to atone for all the areas that became corrupt/polluted. This is an ongoing effort on our side.
Even though blood is unclean, blood is also linked to grapes, red wine in the Old Testament and used for cleaning, look here what is prophesized about Judah.
Gen 49:11 Binding His foal to the vine and His donkey’s colt to the coice vine, He washes His garments in wine and His clothes in the blood of grapes.
Jesus comes from Judah. Here already God gave a solution for us for our sins. We can be washed in the blood of Jesus. We wash our hearts in the Blood of Christ. Jesus is the vine, we are the fruit (grapes), water(blood) flows from the vine to the grapes. Here again it was prophesized: ONLY Jesus can atone/ clean us.
So now we understand why Jesus had to become flesh. God ordained it from the beginning. Only flesh (without sin) can atone for our sins. Jesus HAD to come to earth to give us permanent atonement, to be the ultimate sacrifice.
Isaiah 5:4. What more could have been done for My vineyard that I have not done in it? When I looked for it to bring forth grapes, why did it yield wild grapes?
We only yield wild grapes if we are not connected to the pure vine, if Vine’s blood cannot flow freely to us, only then can we yield proper fruit.
There is only redemption through HIS blood
Heb 9:22 under the Law almost everything is purified by means of blood, and without the shedding of blood there is neither release from sin and its guilt nor the remission of the due and merited punishment for sins.
Heb 9:25 Nor did He offer Himself regularly again and again, as the high priest enters the Holies every year with blood not his own.
Heb 9:26 For then would He often have had to suffer [over and over again] since the foundation of the world. But as it is now is, He has once for all at the consummation and close of the ages appeared to put away and abolish sin by His sacrifice [of Himself]
If Jesus did not shed blood, purged by blood, we would not have been saved. He had to bleed, but His ONE sacrifice is enough. It is enough for you, for me, for then, for now and for ever more.
Rev 7:14 Praise from the great multitude. And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, these are they that came out of the great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb
Rev 12:11 And they have overcome (conquered) him by means of the blood the Lamb and by the utterance of their testimony, for they did not love and cling to life even when faced with death [holding their lives cheap till they had to die for their witnessing]
Heb 9:12 Redemption through His blood. Neither by the blood of goats and calves but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption [for us]
Heb 9:13 for if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifeth to the purifying the unclean, sanctifeth to the purifying of the flesh.
Heb 9:14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who, through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
Water in the blood for me is like a Spirit filled life. The more I have the Spirit in me, in my blood, the more the cleaning will be in my life. It is like the Spirit can see and expose the areas where we need cleaning, the Spirit gently shows us, then it is time to repent, and then the redemption follows due to Jesus’s sacrifice.
Exe 39:29 Neither will I hide My face any more then from them, when I have poured out My Spirit upon the house of Israel, says the Lord God.
Joel 2: 28-29 And afterward I will pour out My Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions. Even upon the menservants and upon the maidservants in those days will I pour out My Spirit.
The word “pour out” here is the same word that is used in the Old Testament when the blood is “poured out” of the animal during the sacrifice. Blood from any earthly living thing is seen as unclean, but Spirit filled blood (from Jesus) is clean and can clean – each of us need a blood transfer. We need to continually transfer Spirit filled blood into our being – when using communion, invite the Spirit into you, let the Spirit expose any sins, repent, accept redemption and then feel the healing that will flow through you.
1Joh5:6 This is He who came by (with) water and blood [His baptism and His death], Jesus Christ (the Messiah) – not by (in) the water only, but by (in) the water and the blood. And it is the [Holy] Spirit Who bears witness, because the [Holy] Spirit is the Truth.
1 Joh 5 is so rich and can justify a whole book on just that one thought, but for the context of this book, it will only be used in the context of the cleaning effect of the Spirit in the Blood.
The word “Naqiy” used in the Old Testament, means blameless, clean, free from, exempt, innocent. I am driven to get clean, to get the blood to wash me clean more and more. We need to be free from sin, because sin keeps us from the Lord. We see the same type of cleaning, purifying in Heb 9 in the New Testament as quoted earlier in this chapter. Let us see how this innocence looks like in the Old Testament and the great reward that comes with it.
Ps 24:3-5 Who shall go up into the mountain of the Lord? Or who shall stand in His Holy Place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who has not lifted himself up to falsehood or to what is false, nor sworn deceitfully. He shall receive blessing from the Lord and righteousness from the God of his salvation.
Water flows like a river
Blood contains a lot of water, it runs through your arteries and veins to all the parts of your body, and then from your body through small veins, into bigger arteries, into your heart. This conjures up the image of a river that runs through the land to the sea, it starts with small streams, that start to join up and as it joins up, it becomes bigger rivers on its way to the sea.
A river is a large, natural flow of water that crosses an area of land and goes into an ocean, a lake, etc. Blood is a large flow of liquid that flows through your body, the body is a large area of land. Blood runs like a river through your body, the main job of the heart is to circulate the blood, our spiritual heart’s main goal is to circulate Jesus’s blood though our lives to every part of the body. From the heart there is one major artery going to the rest of the body and then it separates further and further to the rest of the body.
Gen 2:10 Now a river went out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it divided to become four (river) heads.
Why do we water the garden? Otherwise the plants will die (as discussed in point 1, water is life giving). If we are to be fruit trees, carrying fruits, then we need living water, otherwise we will die. God used the water in blood also as a miracle in Egypt and used a river as the vessel.
Ex4:9 but if they will also not believe these two signs or heed your voice, you shall take upon the dry land; and the water which you take out of the river (Nile) shall become blood on the dry land.
Jesus is the heart of the body of the church. There is nothing like the blood of Jesus. Jesus’s blood is a live giving river (the water in His blood) quenches our thirst. A river is a flow of water, it is not stagnant. River is a large flow that crosses and area of land. Blood is a large flow of liquid that flows through the body of people. Is your spiritual blood flowing or is it stagnant, is there anything that is blocking the flow of your blood? If your blood is not flowing to the different parts of the body, the parts will die off, people get gangarine and the parts need to be amputated. Open up your heart, so that the blood can pump into all areas of your spiritual body and renew each part.
In the same way the body of Christ (the Church) need to keep on pumping the Blood throughout the members, limbs, to ensure there is life. If the church is not built upon the Blood, the Church will die off. The blood must flow continually through the church, the veins is what is keeping the limbs together and they are circulating the blood. What is the veins and arteries in your church? The veins and arteries are those things that binds us together, that creates unity between the body parts. There must be unity in a church, no infighting, to allow the blood to flow freely so that all the parts gets the lifegiving blood. One can elaborate here as well to ask, who and what is the heart of the Body, who is the lungs? Maybe this is another book around the Body.
Throughout the Old Testament, God gave land to His people by means of the rivers as boundaries. Boundaries (from Merriam Webster): something (such as a river, a fence, or and imaginary line) that shows where an area ends and another area begins; A point or limit that indicates where two things are different; Unofficial rules about what should not be done, limits that define acceptable behaviour. Boundaries shows an area where somethings begins and ends
What is the significance of this with blood? Blood is the red liquid that flows through the bodies of people and animals. The body is a large area of land, the blood carves out which of the areas are given over to God and which not. We all have parts of our body and mind that is totally surrendered to God and parts which is still sinful or parts that is struggling more to let go and surrender. The more we learn of and accept Jesus’s blood, the more we carve out areas in our lives to God.
If we accept Jesus’s blood in our lives, we allow the Holy Spirit to renew our hearts, our hearts will pass on (pump) that renewal to our blood. Our blood will circulate throughout our bodies (God’s land) and will create boundaries of what belongs to God and what not, it will separate the areas that begins and ends, that belong or not.
Rom 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world (this age),[fashioned after and adapted to its external, superficial customs], but be transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind [by its new ideals and its new attitude], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what is the good and acceptable and perfect will fo God, even the thing which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His sight for you].
Prov 4:20-22 My son, attend to my words; consent and submit to my sayings. Let them not depart from your sight; keep them in the center of your heart. For they are life to those who find them, healing nd health to all their flesh.
Let the Spirit renew your heart. Your heart will circulate that renewal to your whole body via blood. This separates the areas that begins and ends with Him. The body is the boundary, filled with blood.
John 17:14 I have given and delivered to them Your word (message) and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world [do not belong to the world], just as I am not of the world.
John 17:16 They are not of the world (worldly, belonging to the world), [just] as I am not of the world.
We are IN this world, but not OF (FROM) this world. The blood makes the boundaries of IN vs FROM. Where the Blood flows in and are accepted, our body is carved from the world to become holy. How clear are your boundaries? Do you still conform to the world? Are you convinced enough of Jesus’s salvation to allow you to become different to today’s day and age? Do we conform to the moral standards of the world or do we have better moral standards? Do we get sucked into the culture or do we try to transform the culture?
Thank you for journeying with me this last 8 weeks through the arteries of the Body.
Spiritually Jesus’s blood have Red Blood Cells (responsible for carrying the Spirit’s oxygen to fire us up), White Blood Cells (The Spirit’s army to fight demons and to cleanse us from sin), Platelets (the Spirit’s healing power when we got hurt) and Plasma – that transports water and nutrients – the Word of God – to our being.
The water in the blood runs like a river through every part in our body to give live, to clean.
May your Passover, your Pentecost be spectacular.
